National Education Leaders

Nina Rees, President of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, Keynote Speaker

North Carolina Alliance for Public Charter Schools (Alliance) is excited to announce that Nina Rees, President of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools is the keynote speaker for its spring annual meeting. The 2013 Charter Schools Conference will be held March 21-23 at the North Raleigh Hilton.

The theme “Quality Education for All – Moving NC Charter Schools Forward” outlines the focus of quality charter schools for sustained growth in North Carolina and beyond.

“The spirit of the charter school movement is embedded in the hearts of  those who are running charter schools, and we need to leverage this more effectively and operate with a greater sense of urgency.” Rees said in a recent press release from the National Alliance. “My focus will be to help replicate effective models, attract new education entrepreneurs and further garner bipartisan support. After two decades, it’s clear that charter schools can help preserve the American ideal of a quality public education. The challenge for the next two decades is to build on past accomplishments to ensure that every child can realize the benefits of high-quality public schools.”

Rees has over 20 years of experience in Washington, D.C., including serving as the first Assistant Deputy Secretary for Innovation and Improvement at the U.S. Department of Education. She oversaw the administration of 28 grant programs supporting 1,300 projects including charter schools around the nation.

“Nina is truly an outstanding addition for our conference,” stated Baker Mitchell, Alliance board member. “Her experience in education is multi-faceted spanning many years, and she will bring a national perspective of the charter school movement that will benefit us all. “

Dr. Daniel Coupland, Associate Professor of Education,  Hillsdale College

“Grammar – The First Liberal Art”

Language is the most important tool of the teacher’s trade. As Richard Mitchell (“the Underground Grammarian”) once said, “’Good grammar’…is the Law by which meaning is found and made.”  Hillsdale College recognized that language is the vehicle for thinking, learning, and teaching; and the Education Department decided to make sure that the future teachers who graduate from our college have a solid understanding of how the English language works.  The Education Department at Hillsdale recognized a need for a new course in English grammar and, with consultation from the college’s English Department, designed a comprehensive course in English grammar for future teachers..

Dr. Coupland will present a comprehensive assessment of grammar and how grammar instruction stands at the door to all other scholarship.

You will not want to miss this foundational key to the transmission and acquisition of knowledge in all fields by your teaching staff– whether STEM or of the social sciences.
