Opening Remarks:
Dr. William C. Harrison, Chairman, N.C. State Board of Education
Dr. Harrison was appointed to the State Board of Education by Governor Beverly Perdue in March 2009.
Dr. Harrison will set the tone of the conference at his welcoming address Monday morning.
Special Guest Presentation:
Kate Walsh, President, National Council on Teacher Quality
The title of the presentation is: “What’s Hurting and Helping North Carolina’s Ability to Recruit, Prepare and Retain Effective Teachers.” Kate will review her organization’s five years of study of our state’s K-12 teacher corps.
Following Kate Walsh’s address, there will be a number of breakout sessions exploring legal, financial, EC, and operational issues and solutions facing both new and existing charter schools.
Luncheon Debate:
Dr. June Atkinson, Superintendent of NC Department of Public Instruction debates the Republican Nominee
Second-term State Superintendent June Atkinson as well as her general election opponent will be featured in a debate for an informative look at the future of education through the eyes of the candidates.
Moderator: Howard N. Lee, Former Chairman, NC State Board of Education, NC State Senator, and Mayor of Chapel Hill
For an informative look at the future of education, Mr. Lee will give brief remarks, and introduce the Candidates for the office of Superintendent for the State of North Carolina.
Afternoon Breakout Sessions:
The afternoon will see additional sessions on school governance and the new accountability standards that will be coming into effect in the next several years. Federal reporting and Common Core issues are also hot topics on the program. Learn More

Rep. Thom Tillis, Speaker of the House – NC House of Representatives
The Monday evening reception and banquet will feature N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis who will round out the day’s exciting events with the keynote address that evening.

Breakout Room B – Q & A
On Tuesday, July 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. the NC Alliance for Public Charter Schools Board of Directors will conduct a Q & A Panel Discussion to answer all of your questions about the organization, or charter schools in general. The all-volunteer N.C. Alliance Board of Directors includes charter school administrators, directors, and former public school officials as well as other professionals dedicated to improving education in North Carolina. Nearly 100 years of charter operation experience are represented cumulatively on the Alliance board.
Tuesday Special Speaker:
Pat McCrory – Candidate for NC Governor
Former Charlotte Mayor and gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory will speak at the upcoming Charter School Conference in Concord. He will be speaking at the closing luncheon on Tuesday, July 24.
Media Panel:
Tuesday’s sessions will feature local media personalities and journalists and will share their insights on how you can more effectively deal with the media.
Vendor Fair:
A number of vendors will be on hand to explain their products and services. Vendor sponsors may have separate sessions designated in the program to familiarize you with their products.

Job Fair:
With over 50 new charter applications and the current 100 charter schools growing and evolving, the NC Alliance for Public Charter Schools is adding a Job Fair to the already stellar program for the Conference.
Member schools and new charter applicants will have the opportunity to display their school and their staffing needs on Monday, July 23, from 2:00 – 5:30 p.m.
All prospective teachers are welcome to attend at no cost.
As a registered Job Fair attendee, the Alliance would like to extend you an invitation to attend the break-out sessions that will be offered on Monday, free of charge.

Member schools and new charter applicants who have registered 2 or more attendees for the conference will have the opportunity to set up a table at the Job Fair free of charge. Member schools and new charter applicants who are not participating in the conference are asked to pay a $50 fee.
